Argentine Association of Children
and Young Adult Literature (
ALIJA
)
Every year this organization gives awards to the best Argentine
books for children and young adults. The jury is made up of four
members who are selected from specialists, authors, illustrators,
editors, librarians and teachers.
Book Bank of Venezuela
This award recognizes editorial excellence. A committee is
in charge of selecting the titles that the jury will award in the
categories of originals (written and published in Spanish),
translations (written in other languages, translated and published in
Spanish) and special mentions.
Biennial of Illustration Bratislava (
BIB
)
This prestigious international exhibition of book illustrations for
children and young adults is organized by the Ministry of Culture
of the Slovak Republic, the Slovak Commission of Unesco and the
International House of Art for Children. An international jury grants
the following awards: the Grand Prix, five Golden Apples and five
BIB plaques.
Ibero-American Illustration
Catalog of Books for Children
and Young Adults
A publication that is presented at the Guadalajara International Book
Fair (FIL), along with the Ibero-American Ilustra exhibition. A winner
and up to five honorable mentions are selected among a maximum
of forty-five candidates. The SM Foundation, El Ilustradero and the
FIL Guadalajara invite illustrators to submit their work.
Catalog of Illustrators for Children
and Young Adult Books
Organized by the Mexican Ministry of Culture, through the
Directorate-General for Publications within the International
Children’s and Young Adult Book Fair (
FILIJ
). A jury of experts and
cultural promoters choose three winning works, ten honorable
mentions and up to forty works are selected.
White Ravens Catalog
Every year, the Internationale Jugendbibliothek in
Munich selects 250 of the best books for children and
young adults in the world, both for their language
as well as their subject, new trends and design.
The list is published in a catalog and the works are
showcased at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.
Concurso Silent Book
The town of Mulazzo and the Association Montereggio
Paese dei Librai, the International Organization of Book
Towns, with the support of the Carthusia Edizioni and
in collaboration with the
IBBY
Italia and the Bologna
Children’s Book Fair, present an award for the best
illustrated book that narrates coherently and with style a
story without words.
Awards and
recognitions
Newbery Medal
Named in honor of John Newbery, an 18
th
century British
bookseller, this medal is given each year by the Association for
Library Service to Children (
ALSC
) to the most distinguished author
of American literature for children.
Randolph Caldecott Medal
It is the most prestigious American children’s and young adult
literature award given to the most distinguished illustrator of the
year by the Association for Library Service to Children (
ALSC
), in
honor of the 19
th
century English illustrator.
Carnegie Medal
It is given to the most outstanding book of the year for children or
young adults in the United States. It was established by the British
Library Association in memory of Andrew Carnegie, the 19
th
century
Scottish-born American philanthropist.
Kate Greenaway Medal
Founded in honor of the 19
th
century British artist, it is awarded
annually to an illustrator of children’s books by the Chartered
Institute of Library and Information Professionals, which represents
librarians and other specialists in the United Kingdom.
German Children’s Literature Award
(JugendliterAturPreis)
Sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Families, Senior Citizens,
Women and Youth of Germany, the prize is awarded each year
to the most outstanding works in four categories: picture book,
children’s book, young adult book and non-fiction book.
Branford Boase Award
This British award was created to promote new talent among
writers and their editors, in memory of writer Henrietta Branford
and editor Wendy Boase. It is awarded annually to the most
promising book for seven year olds and upward.
Bologna Ragazzi Award
A jury of international specialists selects the best graphic and
editorial works in four categories: fiction, non-fiction, New
Horizons (for the non-Western world) and Opera Prima (for first
works). It is one of the most important awards for children’s books
in the world.
Caniem Editorial Award
Year after year the National Chamber of the Mexican Publishing
Industry (Caniem) recognizes publishers and identifies the best
books and periodicals published in the country.
Costa Book Awards
A set of literary prizes that are given each year to English language
books by authors based in Great Britain and Ireland. Considered
one of the most important and prestigious awards of the United
Kingdom, they were known as the Whitbread
Book Awards until 2005.
